National and International Trips for Course Credit
RM 3242 Recreation Resources, Tourism and Sustainable Development in Costa Rica
This study tour, offered every Christmas break, focuses on the recreation and tourism resources and services in Costa Rica. Using a comparative government, economic and recreation/tourism industry approach, the course exposes students to the problems related to recreation resource use and tourism/
ecotourism/sustainable tourism development.
The changing cultural institutions and specific governmental agencies involved in this industry's growth in Costa Rica are examined as is recreation service provision for native Costa Ricans and issues of infrastructure and finance.
The 10 day trip takes participants through much of the country with stays at a sustainable ecolodge in the Sarapiqui region, visits to a traditional Maleku Indian Reservation and several days outside the beautiful Manual Antonio National Park along the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

RM 3536 - Coastal Tourism: A Field-Based Understanding (3 credits)
This course is offered each year during the break between Spring and Summer terms. The class is designed to expose students via tours and visits to a number of tourist sites and attractions along the coast of the Carolinas to better understand management, marketing, and programming practices. Specific focus is on coastal resorts, natural/historic-based tourism sites, destination management organizations, and outdoor recreation settings.
Sites visited in the past have included: Charleston and surrounding area including Folly Island, Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Isle of Palms and Wild Dunes Resort, and James Island County Park; Myrtle Beach and surrounding area including the Ocean Dunes Resort, Broadway at the Beach, Huntington Beach State Park, and Brookgreen Gardens; Hilton Head Island including Sea Pines Plantation; Beaufort including Fripp Island and Hunting Island State Park. Each of the settings we visit represent a potential employment and internship opportunity.

RM 4141 Outdoor Recreation Policy Development
This 2 credit hour course will meet in Washington , D.C. from June 24 through July 1, the week between undergraduate summer sessions. Students will study outdoor recreation and conservation bills pending in Congress and proposed federal policies before the trip, then visit congressional and federal agency offices, and nonprofit environmental organizations in Washington to learn how laws and policies are created.
Students will travel by university van and stay at the Appalachian House during the course, and there is a trip fee. The course is limited to 10 students. Dr. Wayne Williams is the instructor.

RM 3535 Caribbean Cruise Offered annually in May (between Spring and
Summer semesters)**
This 3 semester hour course is designed to acquaint students with the process of
operating a cruise ship with multiple international destinations. Spend
a week on a Royal Caribbean Voyager or Freedom Class Ship . Royal Caribbean is
considered a market leader in the tourism industry in terms of service
quality.
Itinerary: Eastern or Western Caribbean
Possible excursions include: Sailing and snorkeling with sea turtles in St. Thomas, or
stingrays in Grand Caymen, a sea kayak tour along the coast in the Bahamas, a rainforest adventure tour in St. Maarten, and hiking Dunns waterfall followed by river tubing in Jamaica.
Cost to be announced but the price will probably be around $2000. The course includes virtually all of your necessities: Transportation, food, lodging, taxes, gratuities and entertainment. Items not included include: Alcohol/sodas, gambling and souvenirs.
A Three hundred dollar ($300.00) down payment is required and
registration is limited to 12 students.
Out-of-state students pay in-state tuition for international courses. As a result,
out-of-state students save about $500 on tuition by taking an
International Programs course!
