Student Advising

Appalachian views advising students as one of its highest responsibilities and priorities.  It seeks to provide every student with assistance in identifying academic and career interests, developing a realistic and successful academic program, planning an effective career strategy and addressing personal areas of concern. Faculty, administrators, and staff are committed to a conprehsensive advising system that addresses students needs at each stage in their university education

Advising Responsibilities

In order for academic advising to be constructive and beneficial, it is important that both the student and the University advisor recognize respective responsibilities.  The advisor is committed and prepared to provide appropriate, accurate, and timely information at every stage of the student’s career.  The studen6t, on the other hand, must be willing to accept advice, realizing that he ultimate responsibility for understanding University regulations and for meeting graduation requirements resides with the student.  Advising is a shared responsibility between the student and the advisor.

The Advising Process

The Advising Process In Physical Education Teacher Education Is A Two Part Process That Starts One Or Two Weeks Prior To The Registration Process For The Next Semester.  In The First Part Of The Process, Students Attend A Group Advising Function.  During This Process, Advisors Will Answer Questions, Help With Scheduling Issues And Offer Suggestions Regarding Scheduling Functions.  Another Important Function Is That Of Advising Related Announcements.  In This Function, For Example, Students Are Reminded Of Requirements In The Course  Their Course Of Study, Provided Information About Second Academic Concentrations, Reminded Of Dates, Gateway Requirements, Etc.  Recognize The Importance Of Providing Time Outside Of Class To Support Students.  Instructors, Who May Not Serve As The Student Advisor, Will Are Amenable To Meeting With Students To Problem Solve Related To Class Performance.

The Second Part Of The Advising Process Is Optional.  If The Student Feels (Or T He Advisor) That An Individual Advising Session Is Needed, It Will Be Scheduled At A Mutually Convenient Time.  Often, Students May Have Personal Issues, Course Issues, GPA Issues, Etc That Must Be Discussed Along With Possible Courses Of Action To Be Taken In Order To Remediate The Problem. 

Advisors Are Available At Times Other Than The Advising Period.  Generally, Advisors Have Office Hours Posted For Meetings With Students.  The Advisors In The Physical Education Teacher Education Program.
