.Admission Policies and Application Procedures
Program Objectives:
- To provide comprehensive academic preparation in the content areas as outlined in the 4th edition of the Athletic Training Educational Competencies and the 5th edition of the BOC Role Delineation Study.
- To provide quality clinical experiences allowing the student to develop the athletic training skills as outlined in the in the 4th edition of the Athletic Training Educational Competencies and the 5th edition of the BOC Role Delineation Study.
Athletic Training Education Program's Admission Policies
- The top students are admitted to the program regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, or handicapping condition.
- The above listed materials are compiled by the Program Director and reviewed by the six NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainers.
- Weighted items include GPA, observation evaluations, and professional goals. Priority is given to those students who have athletic training (rather than physical therapy or medicine) as their professional goal.
- Interviews are granted to those students who obtain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher from Appalachian State University. Interviews are conducted at the beginning of the Spring semester.
- Students are admitted at the beginning of February.
- Once admitted, students must adhere to the academic and clinical policies
- Athletic training is a very physically demanding profession. It is important that the student understand the need to be physically able to handle these demands. To ensure the safety of the student, a physical screen must be completed and the appropriate form submitted by the application deadline.
- The Athletic Training Educational Program is a very rigorous and intense program that places specific requirements and demands on the students enrolled in the program. The Technical Standards set forth by the Athletic Training Educational Program establish qualities considered necessary for a student admitted to this program to achieve the knowledge, skills, & competencies of an entry-level athletic trainer, as well as meet the expectations of the program's accrediting agency (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs [CAAHEP]).

- Minimum of 30 hours of an evaluated active observation in Appalachian State University's athletic training facilities
- Insight statement
- Journal
- Goal statement
- 3 letters of recommendation
- Physical screen
