The Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science (HLES) is part of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. HLES offers undergraduate degrees in five academic disciplines: Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotions, Physical Education and Recreation Management. In addition, the HLES PE Basic Instruction Program provides students throughout the university a wide variety of physical activity courses.

Athletic Training educates students on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses to the athletic/active population.

Exercise Science prepares students for admission into graduate and professional programs (physical therapy, etc.) and for careers in clinical (i.e., cardiac rehabilitation) and athletic professions (i.e., strength & conditioning). A Masters degree is offered in Exercise Science.

Health Promotion equips students to lead out in programs geared toward helping people stop smoking, lose weight, eat better, exercise more, stop abusing drugs, and manage stress.

Physical Education prepares students to be effective instructional leaders in K-12 physical education programs.

PE Basic Instruction Program (Physical Activity / Wellness Literacy) provides students throughout the university a wide variety of physical activity courses to meet varying personal needs and ASU CORE Physical Activity / Wellness Gen Ed Wellness Literacy requirements

 

Recreation Management prepares students to manage natural and cultural recreation resources in order to enhance the leisure experience.

The HLES department offers instruction, research and services in each of these areas to enable students to acquire appropriate knowledge and skills to perform as professionals in their selected fields. The department also supports the following student organizations: Health Promotions Club; Physical Education Academy (ZAPEA), Athletic Training Club, Exercise Science Club, and Recreation Management Association.
